Autism Evaluations

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not as straightforward as many medical tests, such as a blood test. Treating professionals formulate a reliable diagnosis by looking at the core set of behaviors directly associated with autism as well as the child’s family, medical, and developmental history.

ASD can be detected in children as young as 18 months of age. An experienced treating professional can make a reliable diagnosis in children as young as 2 years of age. Early detection is paramount so that your child may begin to receive the support they need as soon as possible.

What to expect for your child’s evaluation

Visit 1: Developmental and behavioral screening and assessment

Visit 2: comprehensive review of assessment, diagnosis,

and treatment recommendations

Visit 1: Developmental and behavioral screening is completed by administering a battery of tests individually selected for your child’s age and current functioning. During testing, the treating professional will ask the parents/caregivers to provide information on their child’s developmental milestones, medical history, and the symptoms and behaviors that are of most concern. The treating professional will also interact with the child to evaluate how he/she behaves, interacts socially, speaks and communicates.

Visit 2: The treating professional will conduct further evaluation and then review the results of visit 1 and 2. This includes a review of the clinical summary, diagnosis, information on the diagnosis, and treatment recommendations made using a strengths-based approach.
